Porsche

Ferdinand Porsche was born in Reichenberg in 1875 and as a young man, he demonstrated tremendous technical aptitude.

Crafting his skills by sneaking into classes at the Vienna Technical University, Porsche climbed through the automotive ranks building his name at Austro-Daimler and eventually Daimler-Benz. Commissioned during World War II by the Nazi’s, Porsche helped design and build the legendary Volkswagon Beetle, creating Volkswagon as a company. After the War, Porsche was arrested and jailed by allied forces as a war criminal eventually returning to the family farm in Zell. During his imprisonment, Porsche’s son Ferry, a gifted engineer in his own right began the ground work for what would eventually become today’s Porsche AG. Assembling a talented group of engineers and automotive industry people, Ferry designed the Porsche 356 which went into production upon his father’s release from prison and approval of the design. Today, Porsche stands alone as the only remaining independent sports car manufacturer. Long run successes such as the acclaimed 911 series has continued to help Porsche stay at the forefront of automotive excellence. Porsche…there is no substitute.

Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet caught topless Monday, 21 May 2012, 7:59 pm

porsche991turbocab Porsche picture

Our trusty spy photographers have caught the upcoming Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet with its top down and its tail up on a stroll through German streets. To our eyes, the extended length and wheelbase are accentuated in the rear-end packaging, but it’s still a looker.

Some reports say that motivation will come from a twin-turbo 3.8-liter flat-six, others say there will be three turbos affixed for immediate low-end action. Horsepower ratings are also a muddle for now, with various reports suggesting 515 horsepower or thereabouts, making for a 15-hp increase over the current Turbo, and that would be followed by a Turbo S with somewhere around 550 hp, a 20-hp bump on the present Turbo S. Other reports say the regular turbo will go straight for the 550-hp jugular, leaving the S to haunt the neighborhood of 600 hp.

What we do know is that it will pack all-wheel drive, a seven-speed transmission in traditional stick or PDK, and every electro-bauble in Porsche’s arsenal when it finally is revealed. For now, catch what you can in the high-res gallery of spy photos.

Porsche shows off 918 Spyder Prototype Tuesday, 15 May 2012, 3:29 pm

porsche 918 spyder prototype 628 Porsche picture

Porsche has officially put the finishing touches on the first prototypes of the company’s 918 Spyder, complete with a black-and-white livery scheme that pays homage to the 917 racers of old. Production is set to commence in a little over a year, and the German sportscar manufacturer says buyers can look forward to taking possession of the first examples by the end of 2013. The plug-in hybrid will command a heady price tag, though. Porsche has confirmed the company will ask a whopping $845,000 per model, each with a 500 horsepower 4.0-liter V8 engine and two electric motors.

Altogether, the gas-electric drivetrain should be good for a 3.1-second 0-60 sprint and a top speed of 199 mph. Perhaps even more impressive is the news that the 918 will be able to propel itself with electric power at speeds of up to 94 mph. That little fact helps account for the news that the vehicle should be able to return around 78 miles per gallon on the EU cycle. Scroll down for the brief press release, but not before checking out the high-res gallery.

Porsche says no baby Boxster, no rush on Pajun Monday, 14 May 2012, 4:30 pm

Just days after reporting that Porsche had plans to introduce the Pajun, a competitor for the Mercedes-Benz E-Class that would slot just below the Panamera, Automotive News quoted Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller saying the Pajun was not a done deal but could become reality in five or six years.

Automotive News was referencing an interview Mueller gave to German newspaper Stuttgarter Zeitung, in which he also says the company has no plans for an entry-level Porsche below the Boxster until at least 2014.

“We would do no good to the brand if we were to lose traditional Porsche customers,” Mueller told the newspaper. In another interview with German business publication Wirtschaftswoche, Mueller said, “Possibly we need to wait until the next generation of customers before the idea of a small roadster will work for Porsche.”

Patrick Long has the best morning commute ever Thursday, 10 May 2012, 9:57 pm

porsche 911 gt3 commute Porsche picture

One of the benefits of being a Porsche factory driver is that you get to get coffee for Hurley Haywood. And if you’re Le Mans winner Patrick Long, according to this little spot for the Porsche Sport Driving School, you get do it from behind the wheel of a 911 GT3 and on a damp, drift-ready track.

But since Patrick Long apparently lives under a bridge, we’d like to know where he puts the troll and if he lets the three billy goats gruff pass whenever they want. And where he gets his coffee. Have a look below to see the video.

Porsche plans E-Class competitor, codename Pajun Thursday, 10 May 2012, 7:29 pm

2010panamera05 628 Porsche picture

German car magazine Auto Bild reports Porsche is planning build a sedan that will slot below the Panamera and compete directly with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Citing no sources (so a grain of salt is recommended), the magazine claims the four-door, codenamed Pajun, will cost no less than $84,000 and be ready for production no later than 2017.

In September 2011, Car claimed the Pajun could spawn coupe, convertible and even a shooting brake variant. Back then, rumors swirled about powertrain options that included a 550-horsepower V6, 600-hp V8, plug-in hybrid and an Audi-sourced diesel.

Hopefully, Porsche is also working expeditiously to find a better name than Pajun, which in Korea is a seafood pancake, in Finnish it means willow, and, according to Google’s translation, in Welsh it means – wait for it – Cajun. That’s the name Porsche was using to refer to its smaller-than-Cayenne SUV before changing it to Macan in February. Clever coincidence.

Porsche Macan CUV takes shape Wednesday, 9 May 2012, 4:28 pm

01 porsche macan spy shots 628 Porsche picture

Our spy photographers have given us our first clear glimpse at the upcoming Porsche Macan. While the test machine we see here wears some Cayenne camouflage, there’s little hiding the small CUV’s roof line.

Based on the Audi Q5, the Macan will boast plenty of suspension tweaks by the minds at Porsche to put the crossover more in line with the sports car maker’s stable. Likewise, while the Macan will borrow a host of gasoline and diesel powerplants from the Volkswagen parts bin, each one will be tuned for more horsepower than we’ve seen so far.

There’s also some indication that Porsche may lift the hybrid system from the Q5 into the Macan’s bones, as well. That means buyers would see a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder coupled to a 44-horsepower electric motor.

Porsche may also look to offer a more athletic three-door version of the Macan later down the line to more effectively compete with the likes of the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque.

2013 Porsche Boxster rated at 22/32 MPG Wednesday, 9 May 2012, 3:27 pm

2013 porsche boxster 52 opt Porsche picture

If you put us in charge of Porsche Boxster development, we’d have demanded more power, less weight and improved fuel efficiency. We now know that the new 265-horsepower, 2.7-liter boxer six is capable of producing 10 more ponies than the outgoing model, and overall tonnage was slashed by 55 pounds, so the base model is already two-thirds of the way toward our vision.

Car and Driver reports that the most affordable Porsche has completed the wish-list trifecta, announcing a significant fuel economy bump. The base 2013 Boxster will boast an EPA-estimated 22 miles per gallon in the city (up two mpg) and 32 mpg on the highway (up three mpg), but only when equipped with the PDK transmission. The manual-equipped Boxster will achieve still-impressive 20/30 numbers, up one mpg and three mpg, respectively.

Noticeably absent is any mention of Boxster S fuel economy. We’re suspecting the 315-horsepower, 3.4-liter flat-six will also deliver significant fuel economy improvements, but perhaps a number shy of the 30-mpg mark.
