Maybach’s history began back in 1919. Under the watchful eye of Wilhelm Maybach, one of Germany’s first automotive engineers who designed the first car to wear the Mercedes badge in 1901, the Maybach W1 was born. Utilizing a Mercedes chasis, the W1 was an experiment project for Maybach to test many of his engineering concepts. A few other models followed but the company’s run as an auto manufacturer was short lived as efforts turned to manufacturing engines for military, marine and rail purposes during World War II. Through efforts at Daimler-Benz, the Maybach name was resurrected in 2003 and a lineup of 2 high end ultra luxury sedans was brought to market. Today, Maybachis known for creating luxury cars that are as exclusive as they are expensive. The automaker’s vehicles are custom-built to each customer’s taste. A long list of options, colors and interior furnishings can be had on any vehicle, but you won’t find a selection of popularly equipped Maybachs waiting on dealer lots. Instead, you must order your vehicle by visiting a Maybach dealer’s “Commissioning Studio,” housed within a Mercedes-Benz dealership.
