Isuzu

The word Isuzu, meaning 50 bells, is the name of a river that flows through a province dotted with ancient Shinto shrines in Japan. The company itself dates back to 1916 when Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and Engineering Company first decided to broaden its business to include automobile manufacturing. A strategic partnership with the Wolseley Motor Company of England in 1918 produced the first car, the A9 and the first truck, the CP. By 1949, the company opted for its current, more succinct name, Isuzu. In postwar Japan, the production of Isuzu trucks boomed as the company’s trucks played a significant role in the country’s reconstruction efforts. The 1960’s saw the launch of many passenger cars, including the Gemini, a car produced through a partnership with General Motors. Isuzu hit the American market in the 1980’s with the Pup. This was followed by the Trooper as the American market began to hit stride with the SUV craze. A Srategic partnership with Subaru in 1987 gave birth to the Rodeo and Isuzu pick up truck. American sales were relatively strong through the 1990’s, so much so in fact that General Motors acquired a controlling interest in Isuzu by 1999. The new millennium brought bad news. Previous bestsellers like the Rodeo and the Trooper were outclassed by newer, fresher competition, and sales plummeted. The Rodeo and the Axiom (a crossover SUV) were dropped from the lineup in 2004. Currently, Isuzu’s lineup comprises just two vehicles, a truck and an SUV, both of which are based on GM products.
