The Honda Motor Company was founded in Japan in 1948 by Soichiro Honda. Japan had been rendered cash poor and gasoline deprived after world War II with its citizens looking for cheap, fuel efficient transportation. Initially, Honda created motorcycles which were simply engines mounted to bicycles. Through the 1950′s, Honda’s bikes evolved into much more sophisticated motorbikes and with the introduction of the C100 Super Cub, Honda began to make a serious run at its closest competitor Vespa. Honda began producing automobiles in the 1960′s primarily for its domestic market. It wasn’t until 1970 that Honda exported its first cars to America. In 1973, the Honda Civic made its way to U.S. shores followed by the Accord in 1976. Both became quick favorites with American consumers as they offered good basic transportation coupled with fuel efficiency, an important selling point given the energy crisis of the times. By the 1980′s, Honda’s success and reputation grew as a maker of quality, reliable cars. Honda began manufacturing the Accord in the States by 1982 and by 1989 had earned the distinction of manufacturing America’s favorite car. Today, Honda’s lineup runs the gamut including fuel-sipping hybrids, spacious minivans, reliable family sedans, rugged SUVs and even a pickup. The manufacturer continues to set the standard in many segments; models like the Civic and the Accord are considered benchmarks in their respective classes.
